Today only: Olympus XZ-2 camera just USD $179

This is a fantastic deal – I own this camera and its my “walk around” camera – I love it. It shoots RAW, it shoots macro close ups, it has a fast f/1.8 lens, and a 1/1.63″ sensor, amazing low light capability, and it’s small, shoots 1080p video, and shoots much better photos than any “point n shoot”. Super convenient. I highly recommend this camera for anyone seeking that feature set.

You can see some of my XZ-2 photos on my Flickr XZ-2 album page.

This deal ends in 12 hours after I post this!

Flying Magazine notes collateral damage caused by model aircraft bans

Flying Magazine notes that many, many of today’s pilot’s developed their early interest in aviation through the model aircraft hobby. Increasingly draconian government regulations against “drones” threaten the entire model aircraft hobby, which in turn, threatens the future of the general aviation industry.

At this time, the use of recreational model aircraft for personal – and any commercial use – is buried beneath a threatening and oppressive rules regime with the United States.

I have suspended use of my Hubsan X4. I live within 5 miles of an airport and the FAA’s rules are a mishmash of contradictory statements, contradictions with Federal law and outright absurdities.

What people search for on Flickr? Naked

I took at look at the search results on Flickr in terms of what leads to views of my photos. Last June I attended Seattle’s Fremont Solstice Festival which starts with a naked bike ride. The event does feature a large number of naked people in wildly painted bodies.

#2 and #8 in the list likely came from people who landed on a photo from the event and then chose to view the entire Solstice Parade album (some photos are NSFW and you must be logged into Flickr to see them.)

What people search for on Flickr

While not shown above, the next most frequent category of searches that land on my Flickr page are for comic con and cosplay (practically the same thing now days). I attended two small’ish comic con conventions in 2014 and posted photos.

I guess to maximize photo views I should just photograph naked bike rides, naked runs and comic cons.

Zemanta’s bias against 3D?

Zemanta is a “plug in” for WordPress-based web sites. When writing content, Zemata scans the text and offers suggestions of photos that can be inserted into your content, generally for free. It’s a neat feature that is easy to use to add valuable images to web pages.

I have an old post that reviews a particular 3D camera and has a title similar to “Camera X 3D Image Quality”.

Zemanta suggests a large set of images of people vomiting or being sick:

ZemantaBias1

This calls into question the algorithm used by Zemanta – if they are this biased against 3D, what are they doing for other topics? Could Zemanta be skewing viewers through targeted image selection?

On my old tech blog, I wrote frequently about the impact of propaganda and its intersection with social media – concluding that Facebook is a friction-less conduit for modern propaganda, where people share without thinking, and “friends” hesitate to point out factual and logic errors made by their “friends”. Thus, errant messages become commonly held “knowledge”, even when wrong.  This aspect of social media is widely known today and exploited by individuals, activist organizations, businesses and politicians.
