Using 3D viewing systems to restore binocular vision

Diplopia is one such virtual reality game from San Francisco. The game, which is still in beta testing, is designed to help people with lazy eye amblyopia and crossed eye strabismus. It recently closed a $700,000 seed round, led by SOS Ventures.

While many will tell you that playing video games are bad for your eyes, the founder, James Blaha, fixed his own lazy eye with the game he invented with Manish Gupta.

Basically, the system restores binocular vision so that patients may again see in 3D. Contrast the above story with the (often badly sourced) claims that 3D TV or 3D movies harm vision.

Google intros subtle “three dimensionality” to Android user interface

It’s subtle – page to the bottom to see the sample user interface: What is Google’s Material Design for Android? Appvigil – Android App Security Scanner.

The software API’s provide new “shadow” features to enhance the Z-axis “elevation” dimension of a control or window. Details of the feature are available from Google.

These effects are – so far – very subtle. I am not sure of the point of this –  its a basic element of graphic design that was used in software more than 25 years ago.

An “API” is an “application programming interface”. Operating systems – such as Android, Windows or Mac OS X – expose features to application programs through an interface, known as an “application programming interface” or just API.

Watching 3D movies may help cure “stereo blindness”

(The item below is an old story from 2012, making the rounds – again. It is a true story where UCSC Prof Bruce Bridgeman restored 3D depth perception as a result of watching a 3D movie.)

5% to 10% of adults suffer from stereo blindness, meaning they are unable to perceive 3D depth or have minimal depth perception. Yet for some, watching 3D movies may be sufficient to rewire the brain to restore depth perception: Living in 2D | Redbrick | University of Birmingham.

While “cosplay” is a recent term associated with the video game/scifi/anime/comic book worlds, it also applies to those who have re-enacted historical events including the U.S. Civil War, World War II, aviation events and more.

James Cameron: “3-D [is] firmly entrenched in the film business”

MR. CAMERON: The good news is that 3-D’s firmly entrenched in the film business. The bad news is that it didn’t make the leap to broadcast. It tried to, but unfortunately it was one of those things where it was done prematurely, and the technology wasn’t right.

….

Now the technology has come along that is glasses-free, autostereoscopic, full resolution, looks gorgeous.
