Did you know that Google Earth is now in stereoscopic 3D?

Did you know that Google Earth is now in stereoscopic #3D? I should have known but only just discovered this. I vaguely remember the announcement in early summer (my Mom passed away at the age of 93 this summer and I was distracted from the Google Earth announcement).

I have an Nvidia display chipset and in the Nvidia Control Panel, I have the “Set up stereoscopic 3D” option set to “Enable stereoscopic 3D”. I do not have a 3D monitor but for me, I have it set to red/cyan anaglyph.

Anyway, Google Earth imagery – and street views – are now display in red/cyan anaglyph 3D!

Update: I am told the street level views, which are in 3D now too, are a fake 3D created from processing the laser range finder data with the still images. Depending on they do the drive-by shooting (couldn’t resist), another possibility would be to use a single frame offset between one image as the left eye and the next frame as the right eye (or vice versa).
